The Flow State

When you are in the Zone you are “In Flow”

As a strategist with a background in finance and business, many think I have lost my mind when I talk about being “in flow’. Yet, those that have known me for years simple say “of course that happened!” as I share one of my many experiences that could not be scripted by the best in Hollywood.

So, what does it mean to be “In flow”? In other terms, it is what athletes would term as “Being in the Zone”.

I have spent a great deal of time reflecting on this as it is a term that has come naturally to me as I reflect on my life, especially over the past decade. Many have shared with me that they think of me as an enigma. They are intrigued by how I think and what I do, and are often curious to know more. In fact, I have people fly across the world to meet with me out of curiosity but, to be honest, I am simply an ordinary person who is clear about the path she is walking.

As a somewhat private person, I am very reflective and intentionally curious about life, people, and mostly about what people choose not to say.

My lived experiences and cultural exposure have allowed me to embrace differences, to look inward, and explore my own triggers and emotions. This, I believe, has enabled me to better understand who I am and who I have chosen to become.

An ordinary person?

I am an ordinary person who has become very intentionally conscious about who I want to be and the impact I want to make in this world. I believe this is how I live my life in flow. I can make decisions easily based on a quick check-in with myself on whether the action, relationship, business, or person aligns with my values and my vision of social impact.

Being clear on my footprint allows me to be in constant flow. It also enables me to have clear boundaries and, in many ways, allows me to create my future. This is not manifestation as so many may think. I believe that there is more to creating your future than by thinking and visualising what you want. I believe that the universe gives you who you are, and who you are all stems from energy.

As a young adult, I made decisions that many thought were unnecessary, but that made sense to me. Of course, I did not see signs or patterns then, but I felt that the steps and actions I took were there to serve a higher purpose.

This is what I called being “Intentionally Conscious”. I attribute this to my grandmother, whom I had deep affection for, and whom I watched, as a young girl, be torn between family feuds. I began to hear through unspoken words and to notice human behaviours. All of this happened subconsciously but today, some decades later, I recognise what has enabled me to see and hear what many miss.

These skills, together with the clarity I have on who I have chosen to be, allow me to maintain my flow and to recognise those whom I cross paths with that aligns at a core level.

Seeing in others what they don’t see in themselves.

Have you ever met someone and felt like you have known them your entire life despite only just having met them? Or maybe you have stepped into a room and knew right away that it was not for you?

I have distilled these innate feelings over the years. Elders and those who live within ancient cultures believe in the innate ability to connect with people deeply through the universe and I believe we too have the ability to tap into this when we pause long enough to connect to our inner self. Children and animals can sense those ancestral connections to the earth and I believe these are skills that we all still hold even though we have forgotten how to use them.

I believe that when we stop being in our head and move into our hearts, we begin to live in flow and operate from a heightened sense of awareness that create positive energy for the planet and all of humanity.

Energy is the source that has equipped me to do what I do and to feel what I feel. This is not a “woo woo” thing. Much research has been done in this field and fMRI studies can show the change in the brain when we activate our body this way.

Looking inward

That gut feeling that we all get, when we stop our racing mind, is often right. I could say that it is always right, because our intuition always protects us and speaks the truth, but our mind will create logic of anything, especially when we have a belief system that tells us one thing despite our intuition telling us something else.

Our beliefs, patterns, and environment are what we have been trained to rely on, so no matter what we believe, it will always be right until we learn the art of pausing. Pausing long enough to slow down, and to get out of our heads to look inward, to feel what our intuition is telling us, and to get into our hearts. This has been the source of my insights recently, the one thing that has allowed me to create a circuit board in my brain to process what I intuitively am feeling and to then mitigate risks logically based on my feelings, whilst rewiring my brain to find new solutions and to be innovative in navigating through obstacles.

Barriers are created but we can be the solutions

It is change within itself that is the barrier. We will keep doing what we have always done until the pain of staying where we are is so great that the pain of change feels like it is the only solution. Too often, we wait for a crisis to recognise the pain, which is why I have begun to show people how to unlock their future before they reach that point of crisis.

These skills stem from the acceptance of failure and trusting again so that we embrace what we know to be true, that the only constant in life is change. This is how we evolve. This is how we grow and how we continue to be innovative.

To stay in flow is to keep looking forward whilst we take the lessons from our past.

Embracing the future with “what else”

As we embrace being in flow, we begin to recognise that it is heightened by focusing on something bigger than ourselves. When we focus on “self” we play a small game and it is easy to stay where we are and keep the pattern repeating.

I often share with my audiences and clients across the globe that when the solution you are working on is much bigger than you, your focus is always in the future. You do not “sweat the small stuff” because you realise how trivial it is. You move past it quickly so as to work on what is important. Life is no longer about today; it is about generations to come and creating preventative measures to stop the continual loops that keep repeating.

If you want to be in flow, begin by better understanding what sits at the core of who you choose to become. Know your values and why they are so integral to who you are and then begin the process of looking inwards to feel what your intuition tells you. This is a practice, it becomes a ritual, and you are the only one that can keep yourself accountable.

All I can share is that when you are ready to step into the world with the depth and clarity of who you are, you will live in flow and live a life of joy.
