The First Fundamental of Business: You
One of the key factors when looking at starting a Small Business or even a side hustle is to take the time to look at yourself so that you gain a better understanding of who you are. Whilst that may seem odd- because of course, you know who you are, it is important to actually stop and think about what makes you tick.
In my free Fundamentals of business, I look at key points that you will need to consider as we go through the first pillar of this Program: You.
Your Purpose
Your Vision
What problem you are solving
Knowing your end Goal
Your Strengths
What may be missing
Your Values

In today’s blog post though, I have decided to go back on 2 of these points which are critical when starting a business: Figuring out which problems you are solving for your potential clients and playing to your strengths.
What problem are you solving?
Often, we start a business because we are either looking to go somewhere or we don’t want to be where we are, and whilst that may be enough for some people, it is a surface emotion that is giving you a nudge to look at something else in order to see the whole picture.
The problem that you are solving is not just about you and where you are in your life, it is really about the problems that you will solve for others: your potential clients.
Whilst most people start a business because they believe that they have a skill and can do things better than what is on offer, this should not be the key reason for you to start your business.
Focusing on solving a problem for your potential clients make this part of the journey stronger from a business proposition and will ensure that you also look to accept feedback on their changing needs, enabling you to adapt and change as required.
Directing your attention externally also shapes you and your businesses values, potentially aligning your actions and values so that others begin to see the full picture of your offering – making you stand out amongst your peers.
Playing to your strengths
Have you stopped to consider what your strengths are and if they are what you use each day as you live and work?
It is important that we continue to focus on you so that as you begin to develop your strategy (our pillar #2), you have a clear vision of what part you will be contributing to.
Working to your strengths is a key element as it enables you to work with clarity, agility, innovation and with ease. You are able to make decisions that are backed usually not only by knowledge but with skill, which places you in a strong position to keep striving forward.
It also enables you to identify things that you need to develop, or more so things that you may need to acquire or seek input from others.
